About Apple
When we think of an Apple
product, the first thing that comes to our mind
is an iPod. Now iPhones are also available in
the market. The Apple Inc. (formerly known as
Apple Computer Inc for its first 30 years) was
established in Cupertino, California on April
1, 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald
Wayne. Headquarters is situated in Cupertino,
California, United States. Previously, it only
designed computer systems and software. The
software includes the Mac OS Operating System
and various software needed for the Operating
System like iTunes, iLife etc. The best hardware
designed by the company includes the iPods,
iPhones and Macintosh Apple computers which is popular
worldwide.
To expand its business with
various electronics goods, the company changed
its name to Apple Inc. from Apple Computers
Inc. on January 2007. At present, Apple has
around 34,000 employees and has a worldwide
annual sale of US $32.48 billion. Their better
quality goods, attractive designs and user friendliness
have made Apple a reputed company worldwide.
And today Apple is the most admired company
in US.
The Apple computer
was first sold in July 1976. It was made by
hand and was marked at $666.66. It was just
a mother board with CPU, RAM and a little textual
graphics. Apple II came in April, 1977 which
had storage capacity. With the introduction
of Apple III, the company started to compete
with many other companies like IBM and Microsoft.
The first Macintosh came in
1984. Initially Macintosh was a hit but later
on, sales were not good. It had high GUI capabilities
which made it a success. In 1991, Apple introduced
PowerBook and System 7. PowerBook looked like
a modern laptop whereas there was a major OS
upgrade in System 7.
Apple, in 1994, formed an
alliance with Motorola and IBM as AIM alliance.
The target was to create a PowerPC Reference
Platform which would use Apple’s Software
with IBM and Motorola’s hardware. In 1997,
Apple announced to make new versions of Microsoft
Office for Macintosh Computers.
In 1998, Apple introduced
Macromedia’s Final Cut Software and various
video editing software like iMov and Final Cut
Pro. During this period Apple developed its
Operating System and by 2001 Mac OS X was released
which had a stability, security and reliability
of UNIX and the most important feature of OS
X was it supported previous applications of
OS 9 through its classic environment. It also
introduced iPod- a digital audio player- in
the same year which was a hit in the market.
About 100 million iPods was sold in six years.
Apple’s iTunes store launched in 2003
offered a song at $0.99 each. In 2005 Apple
offered Intel based PC. It also allowed users
to install Windows XP, Windows Vista with Boot
Camp along with Macintosh.
