| Buying Laptop Computers
Computers
have become an indispensable part of our daily life.
Notebooks (also known as Laptops) are now widely used
by people in all walks of life. Therefore, more and
more computer manufacturers have joined the competition
and are creating various types of laptop computers.
Laptops have the usual components
of the personal computers like a typical desktop keyboard,
display and pointing device working like a mouse (touch
pad). The CPU is compacted within it and it has a
rechargeable battery capable to run it for several
hours without AC power. Processor designed for mobile
computing generally consumes less power. This is important
since you want your battery to last for a long time
and also sustain less heat in your lap. Major computer
manufacturers such as Dell, Toshiba, Sony, HP-Compaq
and others such as Acer and Lenovo have a major market
share when it comes to notebook computers.
But why does the name “notebook?” Because
they look like a notebook with thickness not more
than 38 mm. Various dimensions are now available,
display usually ranges from 13” to 17”
and weighs around 1.5 to 5 kg. Desktop replacement
laptops are available which perform similar to a desktop
computer but generally weighs more. They are generally
more effective and have more ports. The display of
these laptops are generally bigger - 15.4” or
more. But their major disadvantages are that they
become difficult to carry around and give less power
backups.
The term Notebook was originally
included to mean light weight, small and portable
laptops. But now both terms are used interchangeably.
Subnotebooks are also available in the market whose
weight is lesser (less than 2 kg) than standard laptops
and battery backup even lasts for around 10 hours.
If you want to buy a notebook, get to any authorized
outlet of Dell, Apple, Toshiba and HP-Compaq, Lenovo or any
other reputed brand.
Customizing and choosing
the right Notebook:
First you must decide whether you
want an Apple based or Microsoft Windows based notebook.
Apple
is in minority - but popular in graphic artists, students;
and is about 7% in US markets. Selecting Apple is
easy as only one brand makes it. But buying Windows
based computer is generally difficult as there are
many computer manufacturers. You should know for what
purpose you are using the notebook; if it is for high
graphics purposes, you need a fast processor. A separate
graphics card can increase your systems performance
by crunching images separately and thus helping the
processor. Similar is the case with the main memory
and hard drive. You should also see the battery life
of your notebook when you are purchasing it.
Another way can be customizing your
laptop via the Internet. Dell
has introduced the concept of customizing laptops
so that you can choose your hard drive storage, processor
speed, color and you can do this right at the website
of Dell and pay via Card.
Advantages:
• Portability: It is the best
feature of a notebook that makes it more important.
You can carry it to any place you like – parks,
offices, on the way etc making you utilize the time
you would rather waste on traveling. When you carry
a laptop with you, have an instant access to all the
information, and with Wi-Fi and other networking services,
you can stay connected wherever you are.
• Less Power Consumption:
Laptops consume very less power than Desktop Computers,
around 20W compared to 100-800W for Desktops.
• Size: Size is important.
When you have a small apartment you can’t afford
to keep a large table for Desktop PCs.
• Battery Backup: Laptops
are provided with battery backup to give backup up
to several hours which helps you for uninterrupted
work. Whereas Desktops give a backup of only around
20 minutes.
