Ownership
Up to October 31, 2008, public
shareholders own 50.4% of Lenovo shares, 42.3%
by Legend Holdings Limited, 6.6% by Texas Pacific
Group (TPG capital), General Atlantic LLC and
Newbridge Capital and 0.7% by directors. But
the largest shareholder is the Chinese Government,
owns about 27% of Lenovo. Due to collaboration
of Lenovo with IBM personal computing division,
IBM became the owner of 18.9% of Lenovo in 2005.
But since then IBM has slowly lowered its share
in Lenovo. Recently in February 2009 Bill Amelio,
the CEO of Lenovo was replaced by Yang Yuanqing.
History of Lenovo
Group:
In 1984 Lenovo was formed
by new technology unit of Chinese Academy of
Sciences. At first, the company started as reseller
and distributor and after wards became manufacturer
for foreign brands including IBM entering the
Chinese computing market. Then Lenovo started
to produce its own personal computers in 1990
and within 1997 it became most selling computers
in Chinese market. In 2004 Lenovo decided to
expand their company abroad and in order of
that they make possible transition with IBM’s
PC business for $1.25 billon. The IBMs ThinkPad
brand provides a shortcut for building Lenovo
and also provided many new technologies and
designs.
